Book Drive for Early Learning!
The South Tampa Chamber of Commerce Education Committee, in partnership with Hillsborough County School Board Member Dr. Stacy Hahn, invite the community to participate in a book drive in support of literacy and early learning.
Literacy is a top priority for Hillsborough Schools and Dr. Stacy Hahn, School Board Member for District 2, has made literacy her primary issue. Studies have shown that children who are not able to read on grade level by 3rd grade are four times less likely to graduate by age 19 than a child who does read proficiently in the earlier years. Students are also more likely to struggle in other subject areas, like science and math.
South Tampa Chamber CEO, Kelly Flannery, said, “The South Tampa Chamber believes that today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders and there is no better gift than the gift of reading. We hope to be able to play a small role in providing the tools needed for our students to succeed in school and in life.”
The South Tampa Chamber is collecting books geared towards children ages 3-6 years old, however all children’s books (new or gently used) may be donated as part of the initiative. Books will be collected February 1-April 30, 2020 and may be brought to any chamber event or dropped off at the below collection locations.
