Hillsborough County Public Schools Update - July 10, 2020Hillsborough County Public Schools Update - July 10, 2020
State Board of Education
Hillsborough County Public Schools will be hosting this month's regular State Board of Education meeting next Wednesday, July 15 at Strawberry Crest High School, 4691 Gallagher Rd, Dover. Superintendent Addison Davis will be welcoming the State Board of Education at 9:00 a.m. and invites you to attend.
Class of 2020 Graduation
Superintendent Davis recently made the tough decision to hold virtual graduations for the Class of 2020. This was not an easy call but a necessary one to protect the health and wellness of our seniors, their families and the community. Right now, our 27 traditional high schools, as well as our ESE Centers and Adult Education Centers, are creating a virtual graduation ceremony. The valedictorian and salutatorian are recording their speeches, and the principal will read off the names of each graduating senior. These virtual graduations will be ready for families to view on Saturday, July 25 at 1:00 pm on our district website and YouTube channel.
School Reopening Plan
Superintendent Davis continues working on the development of our 2020-2021 School Reopening Plan. The district is presenting families with three options as we prepare to return to school on August 10, as follows:
• Traditional, in classroom instruction
• Full-time eLearning
• Hillsborough Virtual K-12
Our district has sent a Declaration of Intent to each family to choose which option they want for their learner. The Declaration of Intent is due back by July 17 so our district can make appropriate staffing accommodations.
After thoughtful consideration, and many discussions with health officials, families, district teachers, the Hillsborough Classroom Teachers Association and Hillsborough School Employees Federation, we have made the decision to require face coverings at schools when classes resume August 10. Superintendent Davis believes it is the best option at this time for keeping our students and staff safe and healthy on campus. The district will provide three reusable masks for each student on day 1 of class and three reusable masks for staff on day 1 of pre-planning.
We encourage you to visit our School Reopening website -- hillsboroughschools.org/reopening -- for FAQs, videos explaining the options available and the considerations our district is addressing to reopen schools safely. Superintendent Davis created a coordinated and comprehensive plan to address the health, safety and well-being of our students and staff. This will remain a fluid process based on local and state guidance, as well as adapting to student, family and community needs.
